Public Policy

I'm in a class on the effects of public policies on companies and today the debate (you are assigned a side to take) was on immigration. This was, I feel, the best (as in most hilarious) part of the class:

A: "But we are a nation of immigrants!"
B: "Ask 18th century Native Americans how they feel about illegal immigration."

The Double Take

I occasionally check out "kos" and the "puff host" and sometimes find some good posts. Every once in awhile, though, I see a doozy like this one...

... and I'm glad I'm not too like-minded. There are about 30 good answers to this question, but, unfortunately, I think the writer intended for the question to be rhetorical.

500 Days of Summer

Jake and I watched a fun little movie last night called (500) Days of Summer. Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star as Summer and Tom. They meet at work, where she is the new assistant to Tom's boss. Summer doesn't believe in love; she just wants to enjoy life and put off the serious stuff. Tom is a firm believer in true love and soul mates, and is just sure that Summer is the one for him. The movie follows their relationship's ups and downs through a great non-linear storyline. There is some other quirky (in a good way) cinematography, such as a split screen of "Reality" and "Expectation" and a great little dance number a la Enchanted, complete with animated bird. I enjoyed the unexpected twists and turns of watching this couple grow up. Great soundtrack and script, and Tom's little sister steals the show. For those who care: one f-bomb and allusions to sex, but always the cinematic curtain is tastefully drawn before anything happens. 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Two Great Posts

I found two excellent posts on education today on Jewish World Review: this one by Walter Williams and this one by Thomas Sowell. Enjoy.

Prescription Contact Lenses

It's a good thing contact lenses and glasses have prescriptions. I've seen people doped up on those things and really wreck their lives. For being a controlled substance, I sure see a lot of abuse. I know it's probably a couple of sleazy optometrists that are putting a bad name on the industry, but more stringent controls need to be in place. I'm almost positive that the guy in my financial modeling class doesn't even need them. Oh, how prescription abuse has ruined society. We need to get off these meds.

Musings

The picture for this year's Black Management Associationg at Kellogg (see below) is a group of black chess pieces about to checkmate the opposing king. As you may know, I'm a big fan of symmetry and inverting statements and arguments. I was imagining a conference held by the white management association with a picture of a bunch of white chess pieces about to checkmate the black king. Heh. Musings. I would expect the Secret Service to be listening in on a club like that.

New Semester

Third period just got a lot easier with kids getting new classes at the new semester. Fifth period just got a whole lot harder. One of my hellion children (as I lovingly refer to them) has my class three periods a day. Why? Why?!

UPDATE: Add 8th period to the list of hellion-filled misery. Ugh.
